His mother was called Zübeyde Hanım and his father was called Ali Rıza Efendi. Mustafa grew up in this family in Thessaloniki.
Mustafa’s life was like a road through schools. First came one school, then another, then an even bigger one. Let’s look at the stops one by one!
The first stop is the Military Junior School in Thessaloniki. Here his teacher, Mustafa Bey, gave him the name Kemal. So he became Mustafa Kemal.
The second stop is the Military School in Monastir. The school road got a little longer. Mustafa Kemal kept on learning at this school too.
The third stop is the Military Academy, called Harbiye in Turkish. It was in Istanbul. Mustafa Kemal entered the Military Academy in 1899.
The last stop is 1905. Mustafa Kemal became a staff captain. Staff officers make plans. They look at maps and think carefully.
Let’s go over the road again. He was born in Thessaloniki in 1881. Then came the Military Junior School, the Military School in Monastir, and the Military Academy in 1899. In 1905 he became a staff captain.
