On 23 April 1920, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey opened in Ankara. We call it the TGNA for short. People chosen by the nation came together here.
The Assembly’s words were “Egemenlik kayıtsız şartsız milletindir.” In English: “Sovereignty belongs to the nation, without any conditions.” That means the right to rule the country belongs to the nation, to all of us.
Atatürk gave 23 April to the children as a gift. So every year we celebrate 23 April National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. This day belongs to children!
In 1921 the Battle of Sakarya took place. After it, Mustafa Kemal was given the title Gazi, which means a veteran who has fought bravely.
