🏠 German: My Home and Rooms

Episode transcript

Hello! Today we are visiting a German house. The German for house is das Haus. First we will look at the rooms, then at the furniture.

The rooms of the house: das Schlafzimmer (bedroom), das Bad (bathroom), das Wohnzimmer (living room) and die Küche (kitchen).

In German every noun has an article: der (blue), die (red) or das (green). English only has the, so we always learn a noun together with its article.

Learn the article together with the word, as if it were part of it. The ending does not always help: das Sofa ends in a but is das. Most words that end in -e are die: die Lampe.

In the plural the article is always die! The noun changes too: das Bett → die Betten, der Tisch → die Tische, die Lampe → die Lampen, der Stuhl → die Stühle (u becomes ü).

To say that something is there, we use Es gibt ... (there is ...). Then comes einen (der), eine (die) or ein (das), like English a or an: Es gibt einen Tisch.

If there is more than one, we say the number and the plural noun: Es gibt zwei Stühle. Es gibt drei Lampen. (There are two chairs. There are three lamps.)

Wo ist die Katze? Where is the cat? The cat is on the table: Die Katze ist auf dem Tisch. auf = on.

unter = under, in = in. Die Katze ist unter dem Tisch. Sie ist in der Kiste. Careful: after der and das nouns we say dem, after die nouns we say der.

Let’s remember: every noun takes der / die / das, and in the plural it is always die. With Es gibt ... we say what there is, with auf / unter / in we say where. Now try it in Mein Haus!
