⏰ German: My Day and the Time

Episode transcript

To ask the time in German we say Wie spät ist es? It means “What time is it?” We can also say Wie viel Uhr ist es?

For a time on the hour we say Es ist, then the number, then Uhr. That is like “It is three o’clock”: Es ist drei Uhr. For one we say ein Uhr, not eins.

A quarter past is Viertel nach (nach = past), a quarter to is Viertel vor (vor = to). Just like in English: 7:45 is Viertel vor acht, a quarter to eight.

Careful, a trap! English says “half past two”, but German says halb drei: half way to three. So it is halb plus the next hour. Halb drei is 2:30 and halb sechs is 5:30.

To ask when something happens we say Um wie viel Uhr? (At what time?) The answer starts with um (at) and the time: Um sieben Uhr. It means “At seven o’clock.”

In German some verbs split in two, a bit like “get up” and “wake up” in English. Aufstehen (to get up): the verb is in second place and auf goes to the end: Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. It is the same for waking up: Ich wache um sieben Uhr auf.

Let’s start the day! Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. I get up at seven o’clock. Ich frühstücke um halb acht. I have breakfast at half past seven. Remember: halb acht is half way to eight, so 7:30!

Ich gehe um Viertel vor acht zur Schule. I go to school at a quarter to eight. Ich esse um zwölf Uhr zu Mittag. I have lunch at twelve o’clock.

Ich mache um fünf Uhr Hausaufgaben. I do my homework at five o’clock. Ich gehe um neun Uhr ins Bett. I go to bed at nine o’clock.

Here is our whole day on one clock face: getting up, breakfast, school, lunch, homework and bed. Every job has its own time!

The seven days of the week: Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag are school days, Samstag, Sonntag are the weekend. Just like in English, the days start with a capital letter. Am Samstag means “on Saturday”.

Let’s remember: we ask the time with Wie spät ist es? We say it with Viertel nach, Viertel vor and halb, and halb always goes with the next hour! We split some verbs in two: ich stehe auf. Now try it in Mein Tag!
