Today we are in a German café with Pandi and Pengu! Pengu is the waiter and Pandi is the customer. First they say hello: Hallo!
Pengu asks: Was möchtest du? Pandi answers politely: Ich möchte einen Tee, bitte. That means: I would like a tea, please.
Let’s look at the café menu. The first three words: der Tee (tea), die Milch (milk), das Wasser (water).
The other three words: das Brot (bread), der Kuchen (cake), der Saft (juice).
We can ask for two things at once: Ich möchte einen Tee und einen Kuchen, bitte. (I would like a tea and a cake, please.) The word und means “and”.
Pengu brings the tray: Hier, bitte. Pandi says thank you: Danke! Pengu answers: Bitte schön!
To ask the price: Wie viel kostet der Kuchen? The answer: Der Kuchen kostet drei Euro. The tea’s label says 2 euros: Der Tee kostet zwei Euro.
To pay, we ask for the bill: Die Rechnung, bitte! Pengu says: Das macht fünf Euro. Pandi counts out the 1 euro coins: eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf.
Pandi says goodbye when leaving: Tschüss! (Bye!) Pengu answers: Auf Wiedersehen! (Goodbye!)
Summary: Ich möchte ..., bitte. For the price: Wie viel kostet das? For the bill and thanks: Die Rechnung, bitte! Danke! Now try it in Bauernhof-Café!
