🌍 Layers of the Earth: From Crust to Core

Episode transcript

Hello! Today we are going on a journey inside the Earth. The Earth is made of layers, just like a peach.

Let’s cut a peach in half. On the outside there is a thin skin. Under it there is a thick, juicy flesh. In the middle there is a hard stone. Three layers!

Now let’s cut the Earth in half and look inside! On the outside there is a thin crust. Under it there is a thick layer, the mantle. Right in the middle is the core.

We live on top of the crust. Part of the surface is land and most of it is water: seas, lakes and rivers. The crust carries on under both the land and the seas.

In the top part of the crust there are soil and rocks. Over time, rocks crumble and make soil. Some rocks have a fossil inside: a trace left by a living thing from very long ago.

Come on, let’s travel to the centre with Pengu! As we go down from the crust to the mantle, and from the mantle to the core, it gets hotter and hotter. The hottest place is the core, in the middle of the Earth. In real life nobody can go down there. This is our make-believe journey.

A peach and the Earth are very alike. The skin of a peach is like the Earth’s crust: both are thin. The flesh is like the mantle, and the stone in the middle is like the Earth’s core.

The Earth is made of three layers: the crust, the mantle and the core. We live on the crust, where we find soil, rock and fossils. Now go to Living Things Detective and get to know rocks and fossils!
