🥨 German: My First 10 Words

Episode transcript

Hallo! Today we learn our first words in German: hello, meeting people, please, thank you, yes, no and counting up to five.

To say hello we say Hallo. In the daytime we can also say Guten Tag, which means good day. When we leave a friend, we say Tschüss: bye!

Pengu asks: Wie heißt du? That means: what is your name? Pandi answers: Ich heiße Pandi. Ich heiße means my name is.

Wie geht’s? means how are you? The answer is: Gut, danke. Und dir? That means: fine, thanks. And you?

When you ask for something, say bitte: please. When you get it, say danke: thank you. The answer is bitte again: Bitte schön! That means you’re welcome.

Ja means yes and Nein means no. Would you like a cocoa? Ja, bitte! That means: yes, please!

Now let’s count: eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf. That is one, two, three, four, five. The ü in fünf is a sound we do not have in English: say “ee”, then round your lips!

Careful! In English, ei often says “ee”, but in German ei says “eye”: drei is “dry”. And ie is a long “ee”: vier is “feer”. So drei is not “dree”, it is “dry”!

Well done! Now you can say hello in German, tell people your name, say please and thank you, and count up to five. Now try it in Hallo Berlin!
