Episode transcript
Bonjour ! Today we learn our first words in French: hello, meeting people, please, thank you, yes, no and counting up to five.
To say hello we say Bonjour: hello, good morning. With a friend you can say Salut, which means hi. When you leave, say Au revoir: goodbye.
Pengu asks: Comment tu t’appelles ? That means: what is your name? Pandi answers: Je m’appelle Pandi. Je m’appelle means my name is.
Ça va ? means how are you? The answer is almost the same: Ça va bien, merci. Et toi ? That means: I’m fine, thank you. And you?
When you ask for something, say s’il vous plaît: please. When you get it, say merci: thank you. To a friend you say s’il te plaît.
Oui means yes and Non means no. Would you like a croissant? Oui, merci ! That means: yes, thank you!
Now let’s count: un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq. That is one, two, three, four, five.
In English we usually say every letter at the end of a word, but in French the last consonant is often silent: Paris is “paree”, deux is “duh”, vous is “voo”. So deux is not “duks”, it is “duh”!
Well done! Now you can say hello in French, tell people your name, say please and thank you, and count up to five. Now try it in Bonjour Paris!
