🌮 Spanish: My First 10 Words

Episode transcript

Today we learn our first ten words in Spanish! Spanish is spoken in many countries. Listen to each word first, then learn what it means in English.

¡Hola! means hello. The h at the start is silent, so we say “oh-la”. When we leave, we say ¡Adiós!: goodbye.

In the morning we say Buenos días: good morning. In the evening and at night we say Buenas noches: good evening, good night. Both are greetings.

To ask someone’s name, we say ¿Cómo te llamas? What is your name? The answer is: Me llamo Pandi. My name is Pandi.

¿Cómo estás? means how are you? The answer is: Muy bien, gracias. Very well, thank you. Look closely: in Spanish a question starts with an upside-down question mark (¿) and ends with a normal one.

Three polite phrases: por favor means please, gracias means thank you, and de nada means you’re welcome. If someone says “gracias” to you, you say “de nada”.

Sí means yes and no means no. For a taco we say “¡Sí!” and for a pizza we say “¡No!” Easy, isn’t it?

Sound tip: the letter h is silent: hola is “oh-la”. ll sounds like “y”: llamo is “yah-mo”. ci sounds like “see” in Latin America: gracias is “gra-syas”.

A tip: Spanish is spoken in many countries, and some words change. In Latin America, a car is usually el carro. In Spain they say el coche. Both are correct.

Summary: hola, adiós, buenos días, me llamo, ¿cómo estás?, por favor, gracias, de nada, sí, no. Now try it in Hola Amigos!
