🍦 Italian: My First 10 Words

Episode transcript

Today we learn our first ten words in Italian! Listen to each word in Italian first, then learn what it means in English.

Ciao! means both “hello” and “goodbye”. In the morning and daytime we say Buongiorno!: good morning, good day.

To ask someone’s name, we say Come ti chiami? What is your name? The answer is: Mi chiamo Pandi. My name is Pandi.

Come stai? means how are you? The answer is: Bene, grazie! E tu? Fine, thank you! And you?

Three polite words: per favore means please, grazie means thank you, and prego means you’re welcome. If someone says “grazie” to you, you say “prego”.

Sì means yes and No means no. Easy, isn’t it?

Let’s count the scoops of ice cream: uno, due, tre, quattro, cinque. That is one, two, three, four, five!

ci sounds like “chee”: ciao is “chow”. Careful: che is not “chay”, it sounds like “keh”! gn together sounds like “ny”: gnocchi is “nyo-kee”.

At the ice cream shop we ask politely with vorrei (I would like): Vorrei un gelato al cioccolato, per favore. The seller asks: Cono o coppetta? Cone or cup?

Summary: ciao, buongiorno, mi chiamo, come stai, bene, per favore, grazie, prego, sì, no. And uno, due, tre, quattro, cinque! Now try it in Ciao Roma!
