🌳 My Family Story and Our Cultural Heritage

Episode transcript

Hello! Every family has a story. Today we will talk about how to find out our family story, and about the heritage that is passed down to us.

A family tree shows who is in a family. Watch the tree grow: first the grandparents, then the parents, then the children. The star with the gold ring is me!

Every family tree is different. Some trees have a mum, a dad and brothers or sisters. Some have grandparents and a mum. Some have a grandma and a cousin. Anyone who loves you and raises you can be in your tree. Every family is just as special.

Some things at home keep a story. An old photo: who is in it, and where was it taken? A recipe in someone’s handwriting: who wrote it, and what dish is it for? An old toy: who made it, and who played with it?

The best way to learn your family story is to listen to the older people around you. It could be a grandma, a grandpa, an aunt, a neighbour or a teacher. Ask, listen and take notes. Memories that are told aloud are called oral sources.

We learn about the past in four ways. Oral: memories that are told aloud. Written: diaries and letters. Visual: photos and pictures. Objects: an old toy or something people used.

The valuable things that have come down to us from the past are called cultural heritage. They include bayram festivals, traditional crafts, food, folk songs, and historic buildings such as bridges, mosques and caravanserais (old roadside inns for travellers). They belong to all of us.

There is also natural heritage: the beautiful things nature has given us, like mountains, forests, lakes and waterfalls. We want to pass them on to children in the future too.

How do we look after our heritage? We learn about it, tell others about it, and protect it. We don’t write on historic buildings or leave litter. In nature we don’t pick the flowers. If we see litter, we pick it up.

Summary: every family tree is different. Objects, photos and the memories of older people tell our family story. Cultural heritage and natural heritage belong to all of us, and we look after them. Now try it in Kroki ve Pusula!
