💚 Me Gusta: The Verb Gustar
Episode finished! 🎉
Episode transcript
In Spanish, to say that you like something, we use the verb gustar: Me gusta el chocolate.
Gustar really means “to be pleasing”. Me gusta el chocolate means, word for word, “chocolate is pleasing to me”. So the verb changes with the thing you like, not with you. English does it the other way round!
When the thing you like is singular, just one, the verb is gusta: Me gusta el chocolate. Me gusta la pizza.
When the thing you like is plural, more than one, the verb is gustan: Me gustan las fresas. Me gustan los perros.
When you like doing something, that is, when a verb comes next, we always use gusta. Even with two actions: Me gusta bailar y dibujar.
A little word at the start tells us who likes it: me, te, le, nos, os, les. They mean to me, to you, to him or her, to us, to you all and to them. For example: A Ana le gusta el ballet.
To say you do not like something, put no right at the front, before the little word: No me gusta el café.
Summary: a singular noun or an action takes gusta. A plural noun takes gustan. Who likes it? me, te, le, nos, os, les. Now try it in Primer Quiz!
