Episode transcript
Hello! Today we will find the shapes all around us. Triangle, square, rectangle and circle!
This is a triangle. Let’s count its sides: 1, 2, 3. Let’s count its corners: 1, 2, 3. A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners.
This is a square. All four sides are the same length. Let’s count its sides: 1, 2, 3, 4. Let’s count its corners: 1, 2, 3, 4. A square has 4 sides and 4 corners.
This is a rectangle. It has 4 sides and 4 corners too. But two sides are long and two sides are short.
This is a circle. A circle rolls! Trace round its edge with your finger: you never get stuck on a corner. A circle has no corners.
Shapes are everywhere! The window is a square. A slice of pizza is a triangle. The door is a rectangle. And what about the clock?
Let’s make a picture with shapes! First a square: that is the house. A triangle on top: that is the roof. Then a rectangle door and a square window. This house has 1 triangle, 2 squares and 1 rectangle.
Now let’s make a rocket! Its body is a rectangle. Its nose and two fins are triangles. Its window is a circle. Our rocket is flying!
Summary: a triangle has 3 corners, a square has 4, a rectangle has 4. A circle has no corners. Now try sorting by shape in Measure and Compare!
