Episode transcript
Who governs our country? Today we learn what the people, the members of parliament, the president and the ministers do in a republic.
Our country’s form of government is a republic. The Republic was declared on 29 October 1923. Every year on 29 October we celebrate Republic Day.
In a republic the people choose their leaders by election. In an election people mark a ballot paper and put it into the ballot box.
The Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) is in Ankara and it opened on 23 April 1920. The members of parliament, chosen by the people, represent the people here and make laws.
The president is the head of state and is chosen by the people’s vote. The president represents the Republic of Türkiye.
Each minister is responsible for the work in one area. The Minister of Education looks after schools, the Minister of Health looks after hospitals, and the Minister of Transport looks after roads.
Voting is both a right and a responsibility. Everyone who is 18 or older votes in elections. We children can try it by choosing a class president.
Let us put it together: a member of parliament makes laws in parliament, the president is the head of state, and a minister runs the work in their own area. The Republic really belongs to the people.
